REVISIT
Last weekend was the Feast of Jesus Nazareth at the remarkable holy penitent sanctuary of Atotonilco in the central Mexico highlands. Normally silent, haunted, and semi-deserted, devoted to pilgrims’ exercises of flagellation and self-mortification, Atotonilco becomes thronged with visitors and local folk for the biggest religious event of the year. My December piece on the shrine was last year’s most viewed post on Writing Unchained, according to Substack’s analytics, so in honor of the recent festive weekend, I thought I’d re-post it.
